It’s a family affair. Along with his two children, Alfredo Bataller Parietti, a Spanish real estate entrepreneur, was inspired to create Sha Wellness following a miraculous recovery from a neoplasm thanks to medical treatment based on macrobiotic cuisine. It has become a cult destination in Europe, pioneering cutting-edge techniques and preventative medical treatments that focus on healthy nutrition.

In January 2024, Battaller Parietti along with his son Alejandro, now Vice-President and CEO of the group, inaugurated a center in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. ‘It’s a harmonious combination of science, nature and luxury, which invites you to embark on a journey of self-discovery with the aim of achievinge optimal health conditions’, says the young Battaler, who is already working on a new project in the United Arab Emirates for 2026.

Located on a private white sand beach surrounded by mangroves and facing Isla Mujeres, the ten-story building has a spiral form echoing the structure pf DNA, 35 residences and 100 rooms with balconies offering views of the Caribbean Sea;  the exclusive Oceanfront Royal Suite sleeps six and also boasts a private swimming pool. The design, in a neutral colour palette, offers not only tranquility but also pays attention to sustainability: natural materials were used for the construction,  renewable energy sources minimise the environmental impact and waste is composted and used in the organic garden where vegetables are herbs are grown for use in the restaurant. In addition to involving the local community wherever possible, the hotel supports non-profit organizations in their research projects on local marine life.

The clinic is located off the largest coral reef in the Northern Hemisphere: ‘It is an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, and to benefit from the healing
results’ explains Alejandro Bataller. ‘For the first time we are offering our method overseas and proposing therapies inspired by ancient local traditions such as Temazcal, a ritual focused on relaxation and purification of the body, which will be introduced at the end of the year’.

But the real strengths of Sha, both in Mexico and in Alicante, are the programmes based on their methods.  These integrate the most effective natural therapies with the latest cutting-edge treatments of scientific medicine, particularly in the fields of genetics, anti-aging and slowing the process of cellular degeneration.

One of the pillars of the method is the focus on the therapeutic aspect of nutrition which follows the guidelines of the Harvard Medical School, so the dishes at the Shamadi restaurant are based on brightly-colored vegetables, whole grains, proteins and alkaline foods promoting a healthy and energetic diet. By the end of 2024, Earthy, an open-fire cooking concept, will open, also to non-residents.

But many guests, seeking a total reset, opt for a nutritional plan focused on the more restrictive Biolight and Kushi menus.

After a careful and detailed initial analysis and diagnosis protocol, you can choose from five programs aimed at  addressing your end goals, from weight loss to detox and prevention. The remainder of your time will be taken up with group activities that include not only  training, hiking, cinema, cooking classes and live music shows, but also relaxation in the four swimming pools, excursions on a sailing catamaran or with a paddle board.

All this comes without ever forgetting that the ulitmate aim of the trip is to return home with an awareness that our health lies largely in our own hands.
